This work concentrates on the two ancient towns of Rye and Winchelsea and their immediate surroundings. It draws on a contrast between the busy streets of Rye and the more sedate pace of life in Winchelsea. Many of the photographs featured date from the Victorian and Edwardian eras, but the opportunity has been taken to include material from between the wars and into the 1960s when many of the scenes, people and events are still remembered with affection. Many local shops and businesses are recorded some recently departed, along with scenes from childhood and wartime. The bygone ages of sail and steam, and the impact of tourism, are also documented. The author has compiled a collection of 200 photographs which should be of interest to all those who know and love Rye and Winchelsea.
